Study of the Book of Revelation: Chapter 5
by Pastor Jim Summerson

  1. INTRODUCTION

    1. In Chapter 1 we see a picture of the Glorified Savior

    2. In Chapters 2 and 3 we see the Seven Churches representing the history of the Church from Pentecost to the Rapture

    3. In Chapter 4 we see the Rapture, the Family Reunion in Heaven, and the Rewards

    4. In Chapter 5 we have the Key to understanding the chapters that follow.

  2. THE LITTLE BOOK

    1. The word BOOK literally means "SCROLL"

    2. It is Sealed with Seven Seals

    3. It is Written on Both Sides

    4. It Contains the Blowing of the Seven Trumpets and the Pouring Out of the Seven Vials of God's Wrath

    5. It Contains the Redemption Terms for the Earth

      1. Jesus redeemed the soul at Calvary - 1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

      2. He will redeem the body at the Rapture - 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

      3. He will redeem the earth and all creation at the end of the Tribulation

  3. THE LAW OF REDEMPTION

    1. The Law of Redemption Concerning the Wife

    2. The Law of Redemption Concerning the Slave

    3. The Law of Redemption Concerning the Land

      1. Owner could pay, but he being a slave was unable to

      2. Near kinsman could redeem it

      3. Two scrolls were prepared with the terms of redemption written

        1. One was left in the Temple for all to read
        2. Other rolled up and sealed with seven seals

      4. In later years only one was used with the terms written on both sides, one sealed, one exposed.
        NOTE: Revelation 5:9-10

      5. The scroll had to do with the redeeming of the land only.

    4. At the beginning of Chapter 5, two of these redemptions have been fulfilled

    5. The one not yet accomplished is the redemption of the land

      1. Genesis 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

      2. Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

      3. Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

    6. There were three conditions set forth to redeem the land:

      1. Must be a near kinsman
      2. Must be willing
      3. Must be able

  4. THE LAMENTING OF JOHN

    1. Earth Is Still Under the Curse - Sin Is Still Reigning, Devil Is Still the Prince and Power of the Air

    2. No Man Is Found v.3

    3. That Would Mean:

      1. All Old Testament prophecies would be void concerning the reign of Christ upon the earth. (Isaiah 9:6-7; 11:1-16)
      2. All creatures and the earth would remain under the curse. (Romans 8:22)
      3. Israel would never be restored. (Romans 11:1-36)
      4. The Bible would be UNTRUE! (Matthew 5:18)

  5. THE LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH

    1. He Was A Near Kinsman - He Was the Son of Man AND the Son of God (Hebrews 2:9-14; Matthew 3:17)

    2. He Was Willing (John 10:17-18)

    3. He Was Able - Only One Able (1 Peter 1:18-23)

  6. THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN

    1. Must Be A Man

    2. Must Be Sinless (Hebrews 4:15)
      NOTE: Three Avenues of Sin:

      1. Flesh - Pleasure (1 John 2:15-17)
      2. Eye - Possession (Genesis 3:-16)
      3. Pride - Position (Matthew 4:1-10)

    3. Must Pay the Price (Romans 6:23)
ILLUSTRATION: Every Old Testament sacrifice is a picture of the Lamb of God giving His life as a ransom for many.
NOTE: The Lion steps aside and it is the Lamb, not the Lion that opens the Seals. As the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, He acts in power and authority. As the Lamb He was Slain. Without the Lamb there would have been No Redemption.

    4. All Heaven Worships the Lamb v.5:11-14

  7. CONCLUSION

    1. The Scroll Is Ready

    2. The Lamb Is Worthy

    3. The Lamb Will Now Open the Seals and the Tribulation Will Begin and the Long Awaited Redemption of the Land Will Follow!
