THE ANGEL, THE BOOK AND JOHN
TEXT: Revelation 10

  1. THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE MIGHTY ANGEL, v.1

    1. Meaning of Angel

Note: Appearances of Christ in Old Testament (Christphanies)

      1. Isaiah 63:9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

      2. Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

    2. His Appearance

      1. His Face

        1. John 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

        2. Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

        3. Acts 9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

        4. Acts 26:13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

        5. Malachi 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

      2. His Feet, v.15

    3. His Apparel

      1. Cloud

        1. Exodus 17:21; 16:10; 19:9,16; 34:4-5; 40:34,38

        2. Leveticus 16:2 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

        3. Psalms 97:2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

        4. Matthew 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

        5. Acts 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

        6. Luke 21:27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

        7. Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

      2. Rainbow

        1. Revelation 4:3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

        2. Ezekiel 1:28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

  2. THE DECLARATION OF THE MIGHTY ANGEL, v.2-4

    1. Sea and Land Stand for the Sum Total of the Material Universe

    2. Action is Equivalent to Claiming Both the Earth and the Sea as His Own Possession

    3. All Things Must Be Put Under His Feet

Psalm 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Hebrews 2:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

    4. Voice of a Lion, v.3

      1. Identifies Him as the Lion of Judah

      2. Symbol of Judgement

Hosea 11:10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

Joel 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

Amos 1:2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

    5. Voice of Thunder, v.3

      1. John 12:28-29 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

      2. Again, thunder is a recognized type of God's voice in judgement

1 Samuel 7:10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

Psalms 18:13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

    6. Voice from Heaven, v.4

      1. God knows who He can trust with secrets

      2. Paul in Heaven

2 Corinthians 12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

  3. AFFIRMATION OF THE MIGHTY ANGEL, v.5-7

    1. What It Means To Swear

Note: Hebrews 6:13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

He stakes His very existance on teh carrying out of His promise

    2. What He Sword To

      1. Verse 6 - sin is about to cease to reign

      2. Verse 7 - mystery of God should be finished
(Program of God will reach it's completion without delay

        Note: Matthew 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

2 Peter 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.)

  4. APPROPRIATION OF THE BOOK, v.8-11

    1. It Contains the Word of God

Note: Daniel 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

    2. Sweet to the Mouth, v.9

Note: Psalm 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

    3. Bitter to thy Belly, v.10

Note: Romans 9:1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. 3For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

Illustration: "Prophecy both gladdens and saddens as it contains announcements both of joy and grief."

  5. THE ACCOUNTABLILITY OF JOHN, v.11
